Regardless of the job you are applying for, a cover letter is a must if you want to separate yourself from the pack. This is something we have all come to understand in our search to land our dream jobs, but what you may not be aware of is that all cover letters are not created equal and the layout should depend on your field. This is especially the case for tech talent whose job requirements are highly hard-skill oriented. As a tech professional, this means you have to find an impactful way to emphasize your abilities when job searching.

That being said, how do you create the perfect cover letter that highlights your technical skills? You aren’t alone if you are struggling with this task, which is precisely why we created an easy to use template for tech talent to create their own personalized cover letters.

First Steps To Creating Your Cover Letter

First, choose the relevant job skills you want to showcase. This means researching the role you are applying for to better understand the exact desired skills (hard and soft) for the position. Focus more on the hard skills as these are extremely important in tech related roles.

Then, choose three skills (two hard and one soft) you strongly possess, and note the tasks, actions, accomplishments for each skill that clearly depict your expertise.

Once you do this, you are ready to begin constructing your cover letter. Using this as a guideline, be sure to highlight your own personality throughout.

 


 

Dear [name],

I am writing to express my interest in the [position title] position at [company name]. My commitment as well as my passion for [field, ex. Web Development] can be seen throughout my career and experience as both a [former position] and a [former position]. I believe my knowledge in [a particular aspect or feature of your field or background that relates to the job you are applying for], and dedication to [a particular aspect or feature of your field or background that relates to the job you are applying for], make me an excellent candidate to join the [department you are applying to work in] team at [company name].

As an experienced [title, ex. Web Developer] here is what I could bring to the table:

An ability to [a short phrase that reflects skill #1 which directly relates to the job you are applying for]: In my role at [previous job], I [something you achieved or an action you took]. During this time I illustrated my [skill] expertise as a [function or role] in [project name] project by [brief description of what you did to get achieve the end result].

Knowledge in [a short phrase that reflects skill #2 which directly relates to the job you are applying for]: As someone who is passionate about [field], I have been driven by my desire to hon my expertise and excel in [an aspect or function of your field]. In my [previous role], I frequently [action]. As a result, [describe something you a accomplished as a result of your abilities or knowledge in the field].

Experience in [a short phrase that reflects skill #3 which directly relates to the job you are applying for]: As a skilled [role, ex. Software Engineer], my experience includes working on many projects that required me to utilize my expertise in [an aspect, function, or skill in your field] For example, while at [company name], I had the fortunate opportunity to be a part of the [project name] project. During this time, I [action]. This showcased my [skill(s) or abilities] and resulted in [accomplishment].

I hope to speak with you further about how I might contribute to your team and look forward to the opportunity to commit my skills and expertise in [field] to the [position title] position at [company name].
